Pearl PF500 Student Flute

The Pearl Musical Instrument Company makes quality flutes and the Pearl PF500 Student Flute is no exception. This beautiful silver-plated flute is great for any beginner serious about learning to play the flute.

  • Silver plated student flute
  • C foot joint
  • Offset G
  • No split E
  • Closed hole keys
  • Standard quartz headjoint cut
  • Exclusive pinless mechanism
  • Includes a hardshell case and cleaning rod

The Pearl PF500 was designed for with the student beginner in mind. The offset G mechanism is common in student flutes and helps with hand positioning and comfort. The headjoint is a standard student model cut, making it easier for students to play. This instrument makes a good, clear sound.

A feature, unique to Pearl instruments, is the exclusive pinless mechanism. This eliminates the possibility of snagging your clothes with your flute. It also prolongs the instrument’s life by making it harder for perspiration to enter the flute and cause corrosion.

A possible downside to this flute is the price tag. If you’re looking for a student flute that fits a smaller budget, this one may be a stretch. The quality of this instrument is reflected in the price which is in the $500 range. For student flutes, this is on the high end of the price spectrum.

Another con is that the included flute case is just okay quality. If you would like to upgrade cases, there are plenty of options, but that is another expense. And although this flute has a wooden cleaning rod, it does not come with a cleaning cloth – another additional expense (although not a very large one).

Final Comparison

The Pearl PF500 Student Flute is a quality instrument, but let’s compare it to a couple other student flute choices.

The Yamaha YFL-222 Student Flute has a higher list price (but similar purchase price) and is also a high quality instrument. They only have a couple differences. The Pearl PF500 has the exclusive pinless mechanism while the Yamaha does not. On the other hand, the Yamaha YFL-222 has pointed key arms while the Pearl does not. Pointed key arms are aesthetically pleasing and make the keys stronger. You can’t go wrong with either of these instruments.

If you are looking for a less expensive student flute, take a look at the Jean Paul USA FL-220 Student Flute. This flute has a C foot, offset G key, and closed hole keys. It also comes with a nice soft side carrying case and everything you need to clean and take care of it. A possible downside is the material – it has a nickel plated finish instead of being silver plated like the Pearl PF500.

The Pearl PF500 Student Flute is a beautiful instrument, great sounding, and high quality. Depending on your budget, this may be an excellent choice for a student musician. Based on its features and qualities, the Pearl PF500 gets a 4.7 out of 5 rating.
