A carrying case is generally included with the purchase of a flute. The inside has soft fabric, padding, and grooves to protect and hold each piece. Cases vary, some have a hard exterior while others have a fabric shell; some have a carrying handle while others do not. Whether you need a replacement or prefer a different style, there are multiple types of flute carrying cases to choose from.
A popular flute case option is the soft carrying case. This case has a soft or fabric exterior and is zipped shut/open. It comes with a carry handle and usually has an outer zipped pocket to hold other items such as cleaning supplies, shoulder straps, and sheet music. The interior is padded and designed to hold the headjoint, body, and footjoint of the flute.
Although these cases are called "soft", they are still made of a hard material inside of the fabric exterior. This adds further protection of the flute and helps keep the form of the case.
It is easier to find unique color options with soft cases. If you want a fun color or personalized case, soft-side is the option to look into. Of course, it is also offered in the generic black/dark color for a classy standard look.

Most flutes come with a hard carrying case. The exterior is usually plastic but could be wood or another hard material. The flute is protected if the case is accidentally dropped or bumped (within reason). The inside is the same as other cases - padded and designed to fit each piece of the flute.
These types of cases may or may not come with a handle. They are securely closed and opened with two clasps. There is usually room inside the case to keep a cleaning rod and/or cloth.
These cases usually come in the generic black/dark color. You may find some unique colors with wood cases, though.

If you already have a hard flute carrying case but would like the benefits of a soft carrying case, you can purchase a flute carrying case cover. The hard case fits right inside the case cover.
The case cover has a handle - which is nice especially when your hard case doesn't have one. Case covers usually come with an outer zippered pocket to store accessories and/or cleaning supplies.
Case covers come in a variety of colors, anywhere from the common black color to bright blue or pink.

Have a flute and a piccolo? Do you play both instruments in band and need to transport them both regularly? Instead of carrying multiple cases, you can purchase a carrying case that holds both a flute and piccolo. Inserts in the interior hold each piece, protecting from damage.
